Finding Calm in a Busy Life
Life can get busy, between school, work, and everything else. It can feel like there is never time to slow down. Recently, I realized that I wanted a peaceful and creative hobby that didn't involve looking at a screen. That's when I decided to learn to crochet, and it has quickly become one of my favorite ways to relax and unwind.
Starting from Scratch
When I first started, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know what kind of yarn to buy, what a "worsted weight" meant, or even how to hold a crochet hook. But that's the beauty of learning - you get start messy, and that's okay.
The first few rows I made were very uneven and had loose loops and bumps, but I just kept reminding myself that each stitch I did was helping me get better.
The Tools That Helped Me Begin
I learned quickly that having the right tools made a big difference, especially for beginners. Here are a few tools that helped me most:

Crochet Hooks
These ergonomic crochet hooks are super comfortable to hold because of the cushioned handle, especially if you crochet for long stretches. There are many sizes to choose from, and they come individually so you can just buy the ones you need at first.
Another great option for hooks is this Amour Crochet Hook Set. I have not personally used these hooks, but I have had many recommendations and heard great things about them. They come with a variety of sizes, and the handles are different colors to help differentiate the sizes.
Medium Weight Yarn
When I first started crocheting, I wanted a yarn that was easy to work with, sturdy, and didn't split. The Sugar 'n Cream 100% Cotton Cone Yarn has become one of my favorite yarns to work with. It's soft, durable, and is great for different beginner projects like coasters or dishcloths. It also comes in beautiful natural colors!
Scissors
This 2-piece scissor set is great for beginner crocheters. Any scissors will work, of course, but these are great because they come with a cover, they're sharp, and they are small enough to take through TSA!
Stitch Markers
Stitch markers make such a big difference for beginners. They help you keep track of your stitches and mark the beginning of a round so you don't get lost in your project. This stitch markers are easy to use and come in bright colors. They also come with a little carrying case to keep them organized.
What Crochet Has Taught Me
Learning to crochet has taught me patience and the joy of creating something by hand. It reminds me that progress does not have to be perfect, it just needs to be consistent. Some days my stitches are beautiful and even, other days, not so much. But each project feels like a big accomplishment and makes me more excited for the next!
